Reading Responses

Image
The students have been learning about how to thoughtfully respond to reading.  As a class we came up with question that might be answered in a response and an example to use as a resource. The students will be asked periodically to submit their best response for a mark. Reading Responses: Grade 5 Prediction: What will the character do next? What will happen next? Where and how will it happen? Connection: Have you had a similar experience? Have you done something the character has done? Have you had a similar problem/solution? Does this remind you of anything you’ve read or watched? Opinion: Do I like the book? Is this book at my level? Does this book make sense to me? Am I interested in this book? Summary: What did the character do in the book? What is the problem? What characters are in the book? What’s important? What happened in the book? Visualize: What do I picture? What is the character visualizing? What does the character want the outcome to be? How many

Listening to reading

For Daily 5 one of the options is listening to reading.  Students are encouraged, with parent permission, to bring in their own devices and headphones when choosing this activity. Here is a list of websites that offer free audio book resources.  Some are not suited for the age group but others are. Online resources If the students have audio books downloaded on their devices that would be an excellent resource as well. The Calgary public library also offers excellent resources.  If a student has their own library card they are also encouraged to bring this with them. Calgary Library

Daily 5

The students will be learning about the Daily 5 program this week. Daily 5 is a literacy program that will be built into the ELA program and will happen consistently on Fridays. For Daily 5 the students will need books for reading.  Since we have limited access to the library in the next short while if they have any reading material from home that they can bring in that would be great! I have a small classroom library and have pulled some books in the meantime, however if the book is something they choose it works best. When listening to reading, if the students have any technology they can listen to book or podcasts on they will be permitted to use these on Friday with parent permission. Here is more information on the the literacy program  Daily 5
