Editing checklist

The students are in the editing phase of their short stories.  Here is a checklist we came up with together.  It works best to focus on 2 or 3 goals at a time.

Sentence structure – length of sentences

Grammar – verb tense, word order

Punctuation – periods, commas, quotations, exclamations marks, question mark

Vocabulary – precise language, interesting words

Descriptions – 5 senses, showing and not telling

Spelling – dictionary, word reference, google, friend, sounding it out

Capital letters – beginning of sentences, proper nouns

Beginning words in sentences – use different words to start sentences

All events connect and lead up to the climax

Paragraphs – new events/idea = new paragraph

Introduction – establishes character, setting and hint at problem

Solution – is exciting and original
