Fractured Fairy Tales

The grade 5 students have been working on re-writing known fairy tales with their own twist.  We read many examples together and in small groups.  This week we worked on writing interesting beginnings and introducing the setting and characters with a hint at the problem. Here is an example we wrote as a class: Fractured Fairy Tales - The three little pigs “I think the time has come to send you on your way,” mother avocado stated giving her three children avocados a slight push towards the chilled door.   She gave a second glace at their newly dark green skin. “I can tell you have ripened enough where you don’t need me anymore.”   Momacado wiped a small tear from her cheek.   The hearts of the little avocados sunk to the pits of their stomachs.   “Just try not to turn into guacamole!” She pleaded as she watched her children roll out of the large silver frosty home.

Creative Writing

The students have been doing some creative writing exercises and learning figurative language. Here is a good video to provide examples of some of the types of figures of speech we covered Figures of Speech
